Who is your workplace really built for?

Hey there, Disruptor —

Nearly every week, somewhere in the world, someone steps onto a DisruptHR stage and challenges how we think about work.

Every two weeks, Disruptdates brings you some of the most interesting ideas emerging from our global community — practical insights, bold thinking, and opportunities to get involved.

In this issue: designing work for real lives, why hidden policies cost you talent, a community reflection from Tucson, and upcoming DisruptHR events.

From the Founder

There’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.

It's not just about the continued growth of DisruptHR (currently 170 licensed communities in 28 countries) — but about what it takes to protect what makes it matter.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had a number of conversations with license holders and organizers around the world. We talked about launching new communities, creating experiences people actually remember, and the kinds of ideas that truly belong on a DisruptHR stage.

In every one of those conversations, I found myself coming back to the same idea:

DisruptHR works best when it's simple, local, and real.

It’s not meant to be a perfectly polished stage or a replication of TEDx or any other type of event. And it’s definitely not meant to be a platform for the same voices we hear everywhere else.

It’s meant to be a space where new voices step forward — where bold ideas are shared before they’re fully formed, and where people from the local community (not just the “usual speakers”) challenge how we think about work.

That’s what makes these events feel different. It’s also what makes them harder to get right.

Because it requires intention, early effort, and a commitment to building something with — not just for — your community.

But when it comes together, it’s powerful.

So as you read this week’s Disruptdates — and watch the Talks we’re highlighting — I’d encourage you to think about that.

What’s one idea you’ve been holding back that might be worth putting out into the world?

That’s where it starts — and how this community keeps growing.

Insights From the DisruptHR Stage

These two recent DisruptHR Talks build on that idea — challenging how we design work, and what happens when we get it wrong.

_____

Workplace culture isn’t failing because people aren’t trying hard enough — it’s failing because it was designed for a very specific version of “ideal.”

In this sharp and thought-provoking Talk, Kat Atwell challenges the default model many organizations still optimize for: a narrow, highly predictable employee with few external constraints.

The result? Systems that unintentionally exclude experienced talent — particularly women over 40 — and quietly push them out.

This isn’t about blaming individuals. It’s about recognizing that when we design work around one type of life, we lose the diversity, resilience, and perspective that actually make organizations stronger.

“What we need to do is start optimizing for real lives, not the optimizable life, but the actual life.”

👉 Key Takeaway: If your culture only works for a narrow slice of your workforce, it’s not a people problem — it’s a design problem. Build for real lives, and you build stronger organizations.

_____

Sometimes the biggest culture gaps show up in the smallest, most avoidable moments.

In this candid and practical Talk, Jack Ramage shares a real recruiting conversation that stopped him in his tracks — when a candidate asked about maternity policy, and he realized he didn’t have the answer… and didn’t know where to find it.

What followed exposed a bigger issue: even when organizations have strong policies, they’re often hidden, inconsistent, or treated as sensitive topics rather than essential information. The result? Candidates are left guessing, dropping out, or making decisions without the full picture.

Jack’s challenge is simple — and hard to ignore: if it matters, make it visible.

If candidates can’t find your maternity policy without asking, you’ve got work to do.

👉 Key Takeaway: Transparency isn’t a “nice to have.” If candidates can’t easily find your policies, your process is creating friction — and costing you trust, talent, and better outcomes.

Voices From the DisruptHR Community

After DisruptHR Tucson 3.0 on April 9th, attendee Nate Jack shared this reflection on LinkedIn:

For the last three years, I have watched DisruptHR grow, and it continues to thrive.
What a great night in Tucson with partners, clients, and friends.
What stands out most about this HR community is the authenticity. There is a real desire to learn, grow, and challenge the status quo. That is rare, and it is powerful.
Not every event creates the kind of environment where the people around you feel like both trusted partners and true friends. DisruptHR continues to do exactly that.
I will keep saying it: when you build events around meaning, connection, and value, people come. That is why this is a must-attend event every year.
We need spaces that push us to learn, grow, and pursue new challenges. DisruptHR is doing that and more.
Thank you for another memorable evening.
